DVD Review - Wolverine Weapon X - Tomorrow Dies Today - Marvel Knights & Shout Factory!

On May 13 Shout Factory is releasing their next stop-motion animated feature, and this one was written by Jason Aaron with art from Ron Garney! Though the cover shows Wolvie and Deathlok locked in combat that’s the least of what it has to offer…

You get Cap, Spidey, Bucky (as Cap), even Nightcrawler (in a supporting role), oh and Deathlok. Deathlok killing everyone he can get his hands on.

Seems Deathlok has a list of future superheroes and he’s eliminating them, by killing them as babies or taking out the parents. There’s a sequence where Deathlock kills Wendel and Amy Bryant, the perspective parents of Todd Bryant the super powered vigilante known as Buzzsaw, it’s jarring, visceral, it’s the first time this style of animation has actually given me pause, impressed me. The background music selection “Waiting On Your Train” from Sons of Jack was a perfect choice. Now I wasn’t collecting Weapon X during this run (titled either “The List” or “Tomorrow Dies Today” depending on where you look). But if this movie is true to the run it must have been an amazing read.

Like many of the Marvel Knights animation productions this one is broken-down into episodes,  though for the life of me I can’t figure out why. Six 11 minute episodes, so it’s an hour of material but you have to deal with opening and closing credits every 11 minutes. If, like me, you want to watch what amounts to  a short film in one sitting the constant opening & closing theme and credit roll gets old fast. If they’d include a fast play option that skips the credits these releases would be better for it. But that’s the only thing I can take away from this release. Though Shout (and IMDB) give no information about the voice actors the voices seem consistent with the previous Marvel Knights movies I’ve watched and the directing is on par as well. As you’ve probably surmised from my other Marvel Knights I thoroughly enjoy the “retrospectives” that they include on these DVD’s and this one’s no exception. Ron Garney’s reminiscing about working with Jason Aaron on this book and his obvious pleasure at seeing his creation released in this “new” medium is a lot of fun to watch.

I think this will be a great addition to any Marvel Knights library, and I give it 4 out 5 stars.
