I try to be a flexible person. I understand that updating something from my childhood will mean that it will have changed a bit. Sometimes quite a bit but all I ask it that you stay true to the heart of the thing. If you do that I can forgive all kinds of differences.
From what I’ve seen from the preview of the upcoming Jem and the Holograms movie, they missed that mark by a mile. Losing the technological aspect, giving up up on the rivalry they had with another band and taking an African American character and turning her into someone ethnically ambiguous are just the easy sins to point out. They also missed the original message of Jem and the Holograms, to not be afraid to show your true self, no matter how wild she may be.
I had to rant and rave a bit over this betrayal. You can find my feelings vented over at On Wednesdays.
Here’s the trailer, I recommend you go buy the new IDW Jem and the Holograms miniseries after you watch. It will banish this blasphemy from your soul.
