What'cha Watchin': The 12/27 'Best New Shows Edition' ~ What'cha Reading?

What’cha Watchin’: The 12/27 ‘Best New Shows Edition’

So the majority of our shows this week are still on hiatus, and if you’re like me you’re happily watching the epic Doctor Who marathon on BBC America (I am such a happy Whovian right now), but that does not a column make. (I asked, but my editor said no). So this week, for a little change of pace before we start gearing up into the rest of the season I thought we’d do a countdown of the top five new shows of the season.

Problem with that: although I asked a large sample of people (about ten) what their favorite new shows were, they couldn’t pick a favorite. They all picked the same five shows, but after that it was like Sophie’s freaking choice and there was no way to pick one over the other. So here we go, the top five #1 new shows of the season.

1.) Constantine (NBC, Fridays, 8/7c after the hiatus break). Constantine was a big favorite among the What’cha Watchin’ staff going into this season because it’s based on a comic. But it’s also turned out to be a really good show with excellent acting and storylines that are based on the comics but stand up as good TV. It doesn’t hurt that there’s now a Hellblazers drinking game and most of us are playing it on Twitter on Friday nights. Constantine returns January 16th at a new, earlier timeslot which will hopefully give it a boost in ratings.

1.) Outlander (Starz, Saturdays, 9/8c) has been a big favorite of the Geek Girls on staff, and not only because of the really hot scenes between Jamie and Claire. Most of us have been fans of the series by Diana Gabaldon for years, and seeing this one on screen has been like a dream come true: it captured the relationship between Frank, Claire, and Jamie, it nailed the historic era, and it has all the flavor of a sweeping epic. And yes, that wedding night scene had us all fanning ourselves, are you happy? Outlander returns on April 4.

1.) Forever (ABC, Tuesdays, 10/9c) is like a kinder, gentler Sherlock Holmes. Henry Morgan has all the observational power of that detective but isn’t an asshole. And he’s got an intriguing background that we’re only getting hints of halfway through the season. He can die over and over again, and we’re not sure why yet, we only know that he turns up naked in the East River every time. And frankly, I’m okay with that. New episodes of Forever air January 6.

1.) The Flash (CW, Tuesdays, 8/7c) has captivated the entire What’cha Watchin’ Team and a lot of my non-staff friends as well. The tie-ins with Arrow have surely helped, but in the end The Flash is just proof that DC can do really good TV when they set their minds to it. It comes back January 20.

1.) The Librarians (TNT, Sundays, 8/7c) is the only show not currently on hiatus because it didn’t premiere until December. I had never actually seen the TNT movies before the series started (and I still haven’t), so I am living proof that this series stands on its own two feet without that background. It’s a perfect combination of action/adventure and humor, and you should probably be watching it.

Alright, that’s the last What’cha Watchin’ of 2014. Next week we’re back with returns from hiatus, new shows, and who knows what else. What will you be watching?
