Last night Gotham delivered on an exclusive sneak peak of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The 50 second sneak did exactly what many enthusiastic fans, like me, had feared. It served as nothing more than a glorified promo for the worldwide debut of the trailer, which will air this Wednesday on Jimmy Kimmel. While the sneak peak for Batman v Superman was more than what many movie fans are accustomed to nowadays with teasers for the trailers (see Ant-Man here), it did leave us wondering and excited about the footage and overall content for trailer 3. We did a timeline to Dawn of Justice yesterday which you could check out here. If Warner Bros. keeps with the marketing pattern, this will most likely be the final theatrical trailer we get for the Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill film, which opens in three months!
As one of those enthusiastic fans, or “red capes”, here’s a look at what the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer 3 needs in order to deliver fans.
I. More Batman
It’s clear that going into the follow up to 2013’s Man of Steel that many are excited about Batman. He is the bigger draw and the most anticipated aspect of the Zack Snyder film. We’ve seen Ben Affleck as both Bruce and The Dark Knight, we’ve heard him give voice to the conflict of the film, and we’ve seen a healthy amount of him as Batman. What we have yet to hear is how he sounds outside of the armored suit. Maybe trailer 3 will deliver our first time hearing what Ben Affleck’s Batman voice is, or maybe his voice always sounds like that mechanical/robotic voice we heard in the first trailer. With only 114 days left, we don’t have much longer to wait.
II. More Superman
Each trailer for Dawn of Justice has found a balance between both Batman and Superman. The 50 second sneak peak, once again, pleases both teams and gives us a great tease at both iconic heroes. We’ve seen Superman and a little bit of Clark Kent in the SDCC trailer, but we haven’t had any scenes of Superman speaking. Only Clark. It’d be great for trailer 3 to establish a scene of the Man of Steel speaking with either Batman, Lois, or just about anyone.
III. The Music
Hans Zimmer composed the score for The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel. He did wonders for both, but for Batman v Superman, he’s sharing the scoring duties with friend Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL. We know that Holkenborg (Mad Max: Fury Road) will be handling the Batman themes and tones for the film while Zimmer will return to what he started with Man of Steel. Other than the first trailer, which reminded us of Holkenborg’s work on Run All Night, we don’t really know what the soundtrack will sound like. We know it’ll be great and something we listen to on repeat for the winter and spring of 2016, but no one knows when we’ll get our first listen to the music. Trailer 3 for Man of Steel established the Superman Theme, “What Are You Going To Do When You’re Not Saving The World?”, so it would not be surprising if trailer 3 for Batman v Superman establishes the theme for the March 25th film.
IV. Dawn of Justice
While we probably won’t get a look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and/or Ray Fisher as Cyborg, it would be great to see trailer 3 offer fans a little more of the Dawn of Justice as opposed to the Batman v Superman side of the film. While we will most certainly have more of the fight teased, the SDCC trailer gave us a healthy look at the conflict and main fight scene, which was teased in IMAX earlier this year. The 50 second sneak peak builds the anger and fear Batman has regarding Superman and presents us with a scarier Superman that we really haven’t seen since Superman III and a few episodes of Smallville. This is part of the “Knightmare” sequence in the film. What would be very interesting is if we see more of the ongoing investigation Bruce/Batman is conducting into Superman, along with more of Clark Kent “taking on The Batman” as a journalist/reporter for the Daily Planet. Trailer 3 teased us Lois Lane (Amy Adams) investigation into Clark Kent so it’d be fun if we see a play on this with trailer 3 for Batman v Superman.
V. Wonder Woman
Let’s understand that as much as we love Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill), we all want to see more of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). She’s probably the more discussed member of the DCEU Justice League. We caught a few glimpses of her as Diana and Wonder Woman in the SDCC and we even got to see her in action. Maybe trailer 3 will present more of how Diana fits into the story, and like our requests to hear more of Batman and Superman’s voice, we’d more so like to hear Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman speak as we’ve only seen teases of her and nothing more.
And, if none of this is reflected in trailer 3, my sincere hope is that the worldwide debut of the trailer features the actor extraordinaire Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire, Gone Girl, Argo).
Make sure to watch and DVR Jimmy Kimmel, Wednesday 12/2nd at 11:35 ET for the worldwide debut of the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
