I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Wayward 2 this week and let me tell you this series has a lot more going for it than just the obligatory “high-school girl/monster slayer” thing.
Issue two picks up hot on the heels of issue one, where we find Rori trying to reconcile the monsters and the powers with the fact that school is starting. For someone like me who hasn’t been to school in a decade (or two!) you’d think I’d find this a bit boring but the fact is it’s just really well done. And at first I thought this issue would be filler, but even the school-day is presented in a way that keeps you turning pages. It shocked me how different the Japanese school system is, the pressure to fit in, to conform, is so great that at one point a teacher even suggests that Rori dye her hair because the color may cause her to be viewed as a troublemaker. She has a hell of a day but when all is said and done she might be a step closer to figuring out what she’s stumbled on.
The line in the title “is going to turn some heads” is a direct quote from Wayward writer Jim Zub, and it’s in reference to a very specific scene in issue 2. I’m not going to spoil it here, trust me you wouldn’t want me too, but it’s one of those small things that give you insight into a character and possibly a hint as to future problems/solutions in Rori’s life.
I hope you’re reading this book, I have a feeling it’s going to be a great series.
Issue 2 gets 4 out of 5 stars and my hope that this series has a good long run.
