a25c77c1-c58f-443a-b69a-0a38bb56c072It’s a good time to be artist Veronica Fish.  The rising artist behind Marvel’s Howard the Duck has just been announced as the new ongoing artist for Archie by Mark Waid.

The critically acclaimed Archie has already featured major artists like Fiona Staples and Annie Wu, and now Veronica Fish will continue in their foot steps while “providing her own dynamic take on Archie and the gang.”  We’re big fans of Archie at What’cha Reading and the new series is not only a book deserving of its buzz, but also a title that should be on everyone’s pull list.  Sharing in our excitement, Veronica Fish has said the following:

“I’m very excited. It’s a dream job!” said Fish. “And like all dream jobs comes responsibilities. Even though I do feel quite a bit of pressure I’m trying to focus on how much fun it is.”

Archie #5 featured Veronica Fish’s distinctive artwork and, following the announcement of The CW’s Riverdale, which featured Fish’s character designs, it’s only right to have her on the ongoing series.  But, there’s one very key issue why we’re excited – Reggie Mantle III.

“I really enjoy drawing Reggie because his presence shakes everybody up,” said Fish. “He makes good characters like Betty and Archie do things they wouldn’t otherwise.  He is also super layered, and not just a one-dimensional villain.”

I’ve been a big fan of Archie Andrews rival, Reggie Mantle III, and his debut in the ongoing series is something I’ve been looking forward to for a while.  He debuted a few issues back, and to hear that Veronica Fish “really enjoy[s]drawing Reggie” is like music to my ears.  She’s done an excellent job at capturing an authentic and positively charming expressiveness in each character and her Reggie is very much the “super layered, and not just a one-dimensional villain” of past years.

PRESS RELEASE:

The future of Riverdale gets even brighter in 2016 as rising star Veronica Fish (Howard the Duck) cements her place in Archie Comics history as the new ongoing artist for the critically acclaimed ARCHIE series! Joining series writer Mark Waid, colorists Andre Szymanowicz and Jen Vaughn, and letterer Jack Morelli, Veronica will continue building on the artistic groundwork of the New Riverdale established by Fiona Staples and Annie Wu while providing her own dynamic take on Archie and the gang.

“I’m very excited. It’s a dream job!” said Fish. “And like all dream jobs comes responsibilities. Even though I do feel quite a bit of pressure I’m trying to focus on how much fun it is.”

Readers got a first look at Veronica’s ultra-expressive and playful art style in the pages of January’s ARCHIE #5 featuring a doomed team-up between Betty, Jughead, and Archie’s arch-rival Reggie Mantle, who will continue to play a major role in upcoming issues.

“I really enjoy drawing Reggie because his presence shakes everybody up,” said Fish. “He makes good characters like Betty and Archie do things they wouldn’t otherwise.  He is also super layered, and not just a one-dimensional villain.”

With Reggie out for vengeance and his relationship with Veronica getting more serious, Archie faces a major obstacle in ARCHIE #6, on sale in comic shops and digitally on 2/17!
