Veil #1 – A different side of Rucka

In the back page of Veil, Greg Rucka says Veil has in his head for years. He just never had the right artist to bring her to life, “she has always been more of a concept than an identity, and idea in search of a story rather than a character waiting for her story to be Veil101told”. When his an editor pushed him to bring her to life and found him the right artist in Toni Fejzula. So now we have Veil and she is ever so intriguing.

Veil awakens in the subway, surrounded by rats and stark naked. She is clearly confused but manages to make her way out of the abandoned station. She wanders into what appears to be a red light district, where she, obviously, attracts quite a bit of a attention. Most of it unwanted. A gang of unsavory men corner her and make their intentions clear. In pops Dante, who protects her from them and takes her home with him while he tries to figure out who she is and how to help her. The thugs follow them and mayhem ensues, and we see exactly what Veil is capable of. She is not in danger, she is the danger.

I loved Veil. It’s pure set up but I’m hooked. I want to know her story. Where she comes from, what she’s done before and how she got here. I’m also a little in love with Dante, his unflappability and humanity. Since I’ve been reading a lot about race today may I just take a moment to acknowledge that in Dante we have a character who stereotypically would be the thug but here is the knight in shining armor. The writing is pure Rucka but in a different realm than we’re used to. Kudos to him for stretching and experimenting.

Toni Fejzula’s art is top notch. I love the color choices and the way the color shades the pictures. It absolutely evokes the emotions in each panel. It’s a realistic and fantastic simultaneously. It’s absolutely the right feel for the story.

I give Veil 5 out of 5 stars. I’m ready to go wherever Rucka and Fejzula will take me.
