There’s always an argument made in the superhero world as to which comes first, the hero or the villain? In truth it’s a chicken and egg argument that can never be solved. Another truth is the co-dependent nature of many hero and villains, some of whom have even been friend before becoming enemies. Where is Batman without the Joker or conversely, Lex Luthor without Superman? For all the struggle for one to best the other, there is an unspoken bond between nemeses. Translucid takes that bond one step further.
Criminal mastermind, The Horse, has been released from prison thanks to numerous charges against him being dropped. He meets with the Apocalypse 3, a rival gang who have kept the crime stats up in his stead. The subject of their meeting? Where is The Navigator? The city’s favorite superhero and The Horse’s arch nemesis. He’s been MIA since The Horse went to jail. The crime boss has just the scheme to smoke him out of hiding.
I was quite surprised by Translucid, something that Boom is doing to me a lot these days. In the first few pages I was not sure I was interested in this story. Yet another crime boss with a superhero after him. Been there done that but that is not all the story this book has to tell. It reaches deep into the relationship between hero and villain and explores just how dependent they can become on one another. Which I find absolutely fascinating. I’m also intrigued by the kid who appears to be The Navigator’s tech guy. I want to know more about that relationship as well.
I’m giving Translucid 4 out of 5 stars. Hang in if the first few pages don’t capture you, it definitely grips you as you go along.
