WB and MGM unearth the first, official look at Alicia Vkander as Lara Croft, along with a plot synopsis for the film “Tomb Raider.”
Courtesy of Vanity Fair, today we have our first official look at Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, along with a plot synopsis for the upcoming film, Tomb Raider, directed by Roar Uthaug.
“Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.”
Going beyond the vague, but exciting plot synopsis provided by Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’, we have now learned that when this film opens, we’ll be finding Lara Croft as a 21 year old bike courier in London. While taking classes in England and stubbornly refusing to take over her missing father’s (Dominic West) “global business empire,” she becomes inspired to investigate her father’s disappearance which leads her to “a tomb on an island somewhere off the coast of Japan.”
The “tough, smart, vulnerable, and kick-ass” Lara Croft found in Roar Uthaug’s reboot certainly brings the iconic adventurer closer in line with the 2013 Eidos and Crystal Dynamics video game – which, in turn, was a reboot. Speaking to Vanity Fair via e-mail, Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander said the following about Lara Croft:
“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character. I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”
If Alicia’s words regarding Lara Croft do not have you excited for this new Tomb Raider, perhaps the official photos by on-set photographer Graham Bortholomew will. You could check those out below.
Producer Graham King adds: “Alicia Vikander brings tremendous depth and vulnerability to this character, which is every bit as important as Lara Croft’s fierce strength, determination, and physicality. Our film takes Lara from her early origins, to the physical and emotional challenges through which she ultimately becomes the Tomb Raider. It’s a complex character, requiring a range of elements and Alicia brings all of that together brilliantly in her portrayal.”
It will be exciting to see a Tomb Raider movie that presents us with a 21-year old Lara Croft on her first expedition as opposed to the already traveled adventurer we found in Angelina Jolie’s turn as Lara Croft in Lara Croft Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Interestingly, Alicia Vikander is two years older than Angelina Jolie when she first played Lara Croft.
