Preview Tomb Raider #1 – Lara Croft & Gail Simone are a winning combination
We’re big fans of Gail Simone here at What’cha Reading. Rosemary extols the virtues of her Red Sonja title on a regular basis. I’ve loved her Batgirl and her Birds of Prey among other things. When it was announced that she would be writing Dark Horse’s new Tomb Raider title I had high hopes for the result.
Now that I have read I can honestly say, I was not disappointed.
The story opens with Lara Croft on the run as usual. Just when you think all is lost, she gets help, from a familiar face, someone long dead. She awakens and we realize it’s a nightmare. It seems Lara and her surviving crew are suffering from PTSD as a result of their last adventure. A mysterious phone call has her traveling to find out if maybe there’s more going on her than just psychological issues.
I enjoyed the hell out of this comic. It felt like Lara. I’m not a gamer but I have played a bit of Tomb Raider and watched others play. This picks up where the last game left off I gather. I like that it deals with the fallout of an adventure. It’s a nice way to engage the familiar and the newbies a like. The story is intriguing and Simone’s writing is spot on as usual. She’s a gifted writer generally but when she gets her teeth into a strong female character she really shines and the characters blossom under her pen (or keyboard).
The art complements the writing well. Nicolás Daniel Selma’s pencils are beautifully detailed and give a good sense of the action going on. His backgrounds have a great deal of depth as well which really enhanced some of the panels.
I give Tomb Raider #1 five out of five stars. I can’t wait to read the next issue.
