Captain-America_8-674x1024

Captain America #8

See my review of the past 7 issues to see why I wouldn’t miss this. R and RJ put Cap through the ringer in this one, both mentally and physically and the startling scene at the end of this issue will be sure to scar him for the rest of his life, and change some of Cap’s relationships for good.

Hawkeye_Vol_4_11_Textless

Hawkeye #11

Why? Because Hawkeye is the man! He is so cool his dog solves a crime in this issue. Silly as it sounds, this tale has some of the most accurate representation of dog thinking and canine fortitude I’ve ever seen in a book. Only Aka and Fraction could pull this off… Even if the end is kinda sad
( no, the dog doesn’t die!!)

Justice League #21

JUSTL_Cv21_71hy784rff_

Why?

Because Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Shazam back ups in JLA have reintroduced Shazam in fresh new light. Destroying any lame-o Big Red Cheesiness, this is truly a Shazam for the new millennium. And in this issue they add a few more members to the Marvel family ( literally ! ) that also takes an old concept and turns it on its head. For the first time ever I’m looking forward to a monthly Shazam title.

Red Lantern #21

img_comics_16761_red-lanterns-21

Why?

Because I get all things Lantern. Also this is the debut of the new team of Charles Should and Alessandro Vitti. Both do a seamless job of taking this book to the next level. Hal Jordan asks a big favor of Guy Gardner, to return to the Red Lantern Corps, asking him to be an informant after he rejoins the Rage based team he fought so hard to disassociate with. And judging by the last page, Guy goes a little bit above the call of duty…

Batman/Superman #1

BM_SM_Cv1_52flzomr7u_

Why?

Because Greg Pak writing the first meeting between Superman and Batman in the New 52 is just a damn good idea. His scene between Bruce and Clark meeting in a park in a seedy part of Gotham immediately shows you the characterization is spot on and is only enhanced by Jae Lee’s myth-making art and June Chung’s vibrant coloring. A young Bruce and Clark are captured perfectly at the start of their careers and the end definitely leaves you asking questions.

XO_014_COVER_LOZZIXO Manowar #14

Why?:

Because this is the epic conclusion to Planet Death, the arc where XO took off into space to destroy a Planet of aliens who enslaved his Visigoth people millennia ago, using their own sacred battle armor against them. I know. It’s as cool as it sounds. Cary Nord’s art captures a perfect blend of alien tech and barbarian know how. This issue also sets up the next arc re-establishing XO’s role I’m the VU when he returns to earth… And he is not alone!

Here’s a preview of  #14!

Sex#4 and Bounce #2

Sex_4 IMG130170

Why?

Joe Casey’s talent knows no bounds and it is all over the place in these two books. Unfettered by editorial control and heavy continuity, Casey gives us his modern take on superheros that would be too “risqué” or Non-PC for the Big 2 and plumbs the depths of the human condition vaguely disguised in familiar superhero tropes. Definitely not for kids ( and probably some adults).

Last Weeks Sleeper Surprise :

SG_Cv21_uyx87wjsl3_

Supergirl #21

Why?:

Supergirl has been consistently good month after month. She’s not stuck in the iconic role her cousin is, so she’s rougher, tougher, and thanks to some genetic tampering from her dad and an extended period of time in the yellow sun, she exhibits powers beyond Superman’s set. But she’s also not mired down in the half-alternate-future-cloned-son muck that has become Superboy’s lot in life.
This issue featured the return of The Cyborg Superman, his first New 52 appearance. It starts a new arc of Kara trying to find herself by leaving earth to do a little soul-searching in space and running into the iconic 90’s villain who somehow managed to overcome his one-hit-wonder-ness and rise to become a serious threat in the DCU.
Its was a fun read, with a nice reveal and good set up for the rest of the arc.

See ya next week Space Monkeys!!!

About Author

Trained by the Four-Color wizard, Hagan, in all things comic-booky, young Robert took to the streets of New York, dragging his large bespectacled head from comic shop to comic shop, absorbing, learning… knowing…. Until a very delayed pubescent spurt in his early thirties when the tumescent lump of comic knowledge burst forth, rupturing into nonsensical rants about Jack Kirby, superhero related tattoos, questionable cosplay activities, worshiping Jim Starlin as a prophet, and courting the young lady working in his local comic shop. Now he is just mad…roaming the streets late at night while walking his dog, plotting and preparing to unleash more comic-booky goodness on an unsuspecting world. He likes bread. The food. He thinks the band is crap. *Hey wanna freak Bob out? Come follow him on twitter (@dyrewolf1218), he's totally new to it and suspects it may be black magic...* - Chuck the editor monkey
