Top Cow, Image Comics’ “Think Tank” The comic that will make you smarter!

5

This has been a banner year for sci-fi comics, seems like every publisher has at least one title that falls into the genre; Higher Earth from Boom!, Brilliant from Icon, Bloodshot from Valiant and Mind MGMT from Dark Horse just to name a few!

One of the best out there? Think Tank from Top Cow. The tag line says it best “Danger: Reading This Book Will Make You Smarter.” It’s the story of David Loren P.H.D. a man recruited as a teen by the US government. Housed on a base that he never leaves, he spends his time developing weapons for military use. That is until he has a crisis of conscience.

The covers alone are worth buying the series for…

So how will a comic about a government weapons designer make you smarter? Matt Hawkins doesn’t just pull the stuff he writes about out of thin air. He researches every single piece of tech he writes about. And he doesn’t pull any punches with how that tech is used. This book could easily be classified as “anti-government” or “anti-establishment” but I think there’s more to it than that. Matt Hawkins doesn’t only show us the weapons and the horrors they inflict, he takes the time to talk about how the tech could be applied in non-military fields.

The points I’ve already mentioned would be reason enough to pick up this book but let me give you a little more.

When issue #1 opens we’re treated to this monologue, “F=ma When I was six, Fibonacci Coding was my passion for two weeks… Equations and numbers always came easy to me… Math is simple, elegant and pure… So different than people… By age 14, I had already sold my soul to the military… Full scholarship to Cal Tech… The Pentagon even got me girls…” Tell me you don’t want to know more about this guy?

I know what you’re probably thinking, what does this guy Matt Hawkins know about designing weapons for the military. And why make a comic about it? Let’s hear it in his own words, again from issue one, this time in the “science class” section at the back of the book, where Matt explains the tech he’s used in the issue. “The idea for Think Tank came to me when I started hanging with some college friends who had stayed in the science field. I’ve visited several Think Tank sites including RAND and DARPA and have seen only the declassified stuff, but even that is fascinating. Just walking into one of these you feel like you’re stepping into the future. I studied science for many years and have a few degrees but have only learned to love it recently, many years after leaving academia behind…”

Then there’s the art. Rahsan Ekedal does more with black and white than most artists can with all the colors of the rainbow. Here…(click to enlarge)

The best part? The thing that lifts this book above a simple “man finding his conscience” exercise? David Loren doesn’t just rage against the machine, he makes a break for it! The story goes from a tense drama about a man finding himself to an action packed espionage tale of a man on the run! And this is just the first four issues!

But how are you going to track down all four issues of a comic that’s been coming out since August??? Well my friends you are in luck! The trade collecting issues 1 through 4 will be available on December 5th! Two weeks from now! Then in January the series returns with issue 5. Here’s the info;
