The Strain is one of those stories that has come around full circle. Guillermo Del Toro originally envisioned it as a television series. When he couldn’t find anyone interested enough to buy it, his agent encouraged him to turn it into a novel. That novel became a trilogy, The Strain, The Fall and The Night Eternal. The books have been quite successful and optioned by FX as a series. Full circle as I said.
The Strain was adapted into comics and Dark Horse says it will span 24 issues. This week the second part The Strain : The Fall begins.
I was a little worried about jumping in on this issue. Even though it is a first issue it’s based on the second book of the trilogy. I needn’t have worried. This issue sets up enough background right away so I felt I was on solid footing as far as this world goes.
The Strain basically tells a vampire story in the zombie style. It’s an infection, being kept quiet by the government. It arrived on an airplane flight that landed in Manhattan. All the zombie tropes are there, guy who feels he let his wife get infected, then said wife comes after their son, citizens living in armed fortresses, you get the picture.
The difference here is the vampires. There is a guiding hand, called the Master, who appears to be behind the conspiracy of secrecy. He also appears to be the one who is orchestrating the spread of vampirism. There is also an ancient book that holds secrets that can help or harm our heroes mission to save the world.
I enjoyed this genre mash-up. Enough to want to go back and read the first set of comics. Actually even enough to want to go read the books. I highly recommend it if you’re into vampires or zombies. 4 out of 5!
