Are you a fan of Steampunk? I’ve been reading books from the genre for years (the sins of an ex- Barnes and Noble employee, we read it all!) and it has always fascinated me, from the Babbage Engine to traveling the world in gigantic dirigibles the potential for beautiful and interesting imagery and storytelling seems endless. Well if you’re “into that sort of thing” and you really should be, then maybe you should drop by The Steampunk World’s Fair in New Jersey this weekend (May 15-17.) Tickets are still available and the list of events and activities is as varied as it is lengthy.
This isn’t just a convention, it’s an event! There are parties, panels, vendors, contests, music (for kids and adults). They even have Gail Carriger (author of Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, Timeless, and Soulless, & most recently Waistcoats & Weaponry) appearing! This event is so large it takes place in two hotels simultaneously. The hotels (The Radisson of Piscataway and The Embassy Suites of Piscataway) are separated by a large parking lot that holds vendors and the Grand Performance Tent. (Click here for maps and reservation information.)
And what if you like steampunk, and you like events, but aren’t sure if you’ll “fit in” at this kind of thing? According to the creator and producer of The Steampunk World’s Fair Jeff Mach,
“There’s no right way to do Steampunk. There’s no wrong way to do Steampunk. It’s like eating a Reese’s, only with more gears. ” – Jeff Mach “Steampunk: What To Wear“
