I’ve never been a big horror movie fan. Suspense is great but the blood and gore genre just never worked for me. Give me sci-fi or comedy any day. That being said I find horror comics a lot of fun. The talent it takes to frighten, not just shock, in a comic is hard to come by. And though I would usually discount a spin-off pretty quickly I decided to give this trade a shot.
If you’re unfamiliar with the premise I’ll give you a quick recap. The series revolves around a group of anthropomorphic puppets animated by an Egyptian spell, who each have their own unique weapon. The personalities inhabiting these puppets were people once, some trapped, some tricked, and are now forced to do the bidding of the puppet master who controls them. In film and comics they’ve been portrayed as heroes, anti-heroes, and antagonists, sometimes all at the same time.
This moment in the series finds them quite possibly at the end of their tortuous journey, one of their group has come upon a psychic, Madam Adon, who promises to free them from the puppets once and for all. Sounds too good to be true? Yea it probably is! There’s always a price, though even the reader won’t anticipate how much this will cost our little blood-thirsty band.
Shawn, Michela, and Yann give us a well paced, beautifully (and sometimes shockingly) drawn comic that while gory knows what not to show and how to keep the reveals interesting. The last fourth of the story so neatly ties it all up, and has such a fun twist that I can recommend this trade to any and all horror fans.
