There are a few series that feature characters out of myth and legend but for my money Perhapanauts is one to buy. Created in 2005 by writer Todd Dezago and artist Craig Rousseau and originally published by Dark Horse Comics (and now with Image) this series follows a team of supernatural investigators, investigators who themselves happen to be supernatural beings, working for a secret government agency called Bedlam. Bedlam’s mandate? Investigate places where the fabric between universes has worn thin, find the creatures that have slipped through, send them back from whence they came, and seal up the rifts. Cakewalk.
Working for Bedlam we have; Big (Sasquatch with a highly developed intellect), MG (Brilliant scientist & interdimensional traveler), Choopie (Chupacbra), Arisa (Telepath) and Molly (Ghost, not happy about it) and that’s just the Blue Team. It’s a big cast but they’re all well-developed characters with depth and personality. The stories involve creatures like The Jersey Devil but what they really focus on is the team. These characters may all be monsters of one kind or another but it’s their humanity, their relationships that make the book work.
The series on the stands now is “Danger Down Under.” Here’s the pitch “When an Australian contingent of Bedlam goes missing, the remaining agents from the American teams join forces to find them. But what foul Beast lurks beneath the billabongs?”
Issue #3 hits the stands on January 9 and when I stopped by The Perhapablog I found this cover art.
The first cover is from the uber talented Craig Rousseau and that second one? That is from Charles Paul Wilson III, the artist on the amazing “The Stuff of Legend”! (Who we were lucky enough to interview at NYCC)
But maybe my words haven’t swayed you. Maybe that amazing cover art didn’t peak your interest. Maybe you’re not quite ready to fork over your hard-earned dollars without a taste? Well here you go, download The Perhapanauts Annual. It’s a pdf so you can read it on just about any device more advanced than a calculator.
If you’re looking for a book that has interesting, fun plots and characters you’ll want to hang out with then pick up any Perhapanauts mini-series or one-shot. The art is always extraordinary and each one is written as a jumping on point. Be warned though you’ll be searching back issue bins and trade shelves looking for the older ones. This series is that good.
If you’re ready to jump into the world of The Perhapanauts? Then follow the links and buy one (or more) of the 3 mini-series or the special issues. You can get them at amazon and at the Perhapanauts Store.
