John Byrne and I go way back. His She-Hulk is the definitive She-Hulk as far as I’m concerned. I loved Danger Unlimited and Babe although I never did read Next Men. I also think his re-boot of Superman breathed new life into the boy scout. There is no denying though that I haven’t loved anything of his in quite a while. In fact his Wonder Woman run is one of the few times I stopped buying the comic.
I wasn’t sure where I would stand on Highways and quite frankly I’m still not sure even having finished it.
The Highways graphic novel collects the four-part mini-series IDW published earlier this year. It’s a classic space opera. New kid joins a crew of veteran space haulers. His first mission changes almost the minute he gets there. It becomes an eight month-long flight. Once they arrive at their destination they discover they were never expected. They also quickly realize nothing is as it seems.
There is nothing not to like about this comic. The story is good. The characters are likable. The art…well I haven’t been a fan of Byrne’s art for years. His faces feel needlessly harsh but that’s a purely subjective opinion. I also like that the lead characters are people of color. Nice change of pace that.
Yet I really had to trudge through this. I looked for any distraction while I was reading it. I can’t explain why, it just didn’t engage me. I finish most graphic novels in an hour or two this literally took me a week to get through. I just didn’t find it a must read. I wasn’t dying to know what was going on. The pacing was quick enough but somehow I felt no suspense whatsoever.
If you’re a John Byrne fan you may like this. If you’re a fan of space stories you may as well but I can’t in all honesty recommend it. It just didn’t float my boat. 2 out of 5
