Summer can be a lonely time. A time when all your favorite shows are on Summer hiatus. Sure there are other shows to watch but they can’t fill the hole in your life where your favorite show lives. Thankfully sometimes the comic gods come through to help get you through this difficult time. Like this week when The Blacklist #1 premieres, I mean shows up, at your local comic shop.
Here’s Titan’s intro to the series:
The comic series is penned by Nichole Phillips and drawn by Beni Lobel (Constantine, Batman: Arkham Unhinged) and developed in conjunction with The Blacklist TV series from Sony Pictures Television. The first arc (Issues 1-5) will feature stories which expand upon the events of the TV series and feature all the major characters from the show, including the formidable Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington, played by James Spader, along with characters Lizzie (Megan Boone), Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff), Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) and others.
The issue starts just like an episode of the show. Red’s voiceover was so pitch perfect that if I was reading it without images I would have known it was him just by the words. There’s three different things going on at once and it takes a second to get a hold of how they’ll all come together but of course they do. The structure is also very close to the show that way. I enjoyed the art, the hardest thing in doing a comic of a movie or show is making sure the characters look familiar enough that you know who they are and they do here.
Overall I’m giving The Blacklist #1 4 and 1/2 out of 5 stars. It’s a great adaptation of familiar characters and settings with enough originality to make me eager to see what happens next. I highly recommend it for fans. If you don’t watch the show I think you may still enjoy it. It gave enough of the backstory to help you understand some of the relationships but not so much that it got bogged down in exposition. It’s definitely going on my pull list.
