Tao Okamoto in Batman v. Superman!

Tao Okamoto in Batman v. Superman!

Announced on DC All Access comes the confirmation that Tao Okamoto (Hannibal, The Wolverine) will be portraying Mercy Graves in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  The appearance of Mercy should be of no surprise to many fans as it was widely rumored she’d be portraying the bodyguard/personal assistant to Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).

While Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will mark the first feature film for Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor’s bodyguard who debuted in 1996 on Superman: The Animated Series, she has seen some screen time of sorts. The Smallville character Tess Mercer, portrayed by Cassidy Freeman, was an attempt to combine Mercy Graves and Miss Tessmacher from Superman: The Movie.

While it’s too early to speculate, in the original press announcement regarding Tao Okamoto, Callan Mulvey, and Holly Hunter’s casting, it was revealed that “all three actors will play characters newly created for the film.”  While we know Holly Hunter will be portraying Senator Stern, we still do not know who Callan Mulvey will be playing.  Since Tao Okamoto has been announced as Mercy, certainly not “newly created”, is it possible that Mulvey will be someone from the comics/cartoon?  In regards to Okamoto’s casting, director Zack Snyder has said “And, quite simply, Tao is a striking presence whose beauty is aptly rivaled by her amazing abilities as an actress.  I’m really excited to have her joining us on this adventure.”

Mercy Graves first comic appearance was Superman Adventures #1, with her addition to the DC Universe being Detective Comics #735.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25, 2016.
