Tanpopo Volumes 1 & 2 - The Only Limits Are The Imagination! ~ What'cha Reading?

Tanpopo Volumes 1 & 2 – The Only Limits Are The Imagination!

Emotions are a double-edged sword. It’s very difficult to have a fulfilling life without them. In order to appreciate the highest highs in life you must also experience the lowest lows. Joy is the reward for walking through the fires of pain but I’m not sure you can know true joy unless you let yourself truly feel that pain. These are the harsh lessons Tanpopo is learning after the Devil tempts her away from her stagnant life.

Tanpopo Volumes 1 & 2 - The Only Limits Are The Imagination!

In volume one we meet Tanpopo. She is a beautiful young girl. When we first see her she’s attached to a machine and seems to have experienced nothing else in life. An adorable little creature comes to her and offers her experience and wings, literally. He is in fact the Devil in disguise. He offers to take her on a journey to teach her about human emotions. She takes his offer. She removes herself from the machine and leaves. As she is leaving, the Devil creature, Kuro Poodle, turns into a handsome young man, Kuro Human. Together they set out on a journey to expand Tanpopo’s knowledge with all that comes from human emotions, good and bad.

In the second volume, Tanpopo is still reeling from the betrayals and loss she suffered and caused in the first volume. She’s come to realize life and feelings aren’t always calm and beautiful. It is often frightening and ugly. She gets lost in a realm where death holds sway and is overwhelmed because she is alone and afraid.

Tanpopo is the comic form elevated to art. Most of the text is borrowed, meaningfully, from great works of literature, such as Faust, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Shakespeare and Poe. Melded together by d’Errico to build the story she is telling, the classic works lend a beautiful scaffold for her creation. Tanpopo herself, is a mystery as we don’t know how she came to be but in the end her journey and trials are familiar as we all crave knowledge and experience and often give in to our darker sides to get them.

The art is breathtaking and has a clear Japanese influence, as does the story and characters. The volumes are both hard bound and slipcovered, which is appropriate for such a work. The entire presentation is befitting the material.

I give both volumes of Tanpopo 5 out of 5 stars. It is one of those stories that show there are no limits to the comic/graphic novel format, only limits to an artist/writer’s imagination. Camilla d’Errico’s imagination seems to have found a place to expand it’s own limits as well.

About Author

Mother, knitter, writer, bookseller, and geek by day but at night I revert to the 10 year old that I really am. I spend my spare time plotting world domination using an army of knitters. Got to keep the weavers in check.
