Last month we reported that Tom Cruise is in talks to star in the reboot of The Mummy (Tom Cruise Meets The Mummy?!?), which will give birth to a shared cinematic universe starring the Universal Classic Monsters. Now we have word, announced first at The Hollywood Reporter, that Sofia Boutella is in talks to star in The Mummy.
Sofia Boutella, a classically trained dancer recognizable as a back-up for Madonna during the Confessions Tour and Sticky and Sweet Tour, along with being a model in several Nike ads, starred in a breakout role in this past year’s Kingsman film, along with playing an undisclosed character in 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. The 33 year old Algerian dancer/model/actress “is in talks to play the titular role in Universal’s The Mummy, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.”
Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan were chosen last summer to help develop a shared universe for Universal, much like the MCU and upcoming DCEU, where its classic monster movie library is the chief brand. Kurtzman is also on board to direct and will produce alongside Morgan as well as Sean Daniel. Jon Spaihts is penning the script. We do not know much regarding the plot, other than it will be set in present day and not in the 20’s like the Brendan Fraser series.
“A Universal spokesperson said the studio is not commenting on any casting speculation surrounding The Mummy“, which would lead many to believe that Sofia Boutella will star alongside Tom Cruise in the March 24, 2017 film being directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts.
It will be very exciting to see the film career Sofia Boutella has especially with a starring turn in Star Trek Beyond and with the potential of playing the lead role of The Mummy. She is repped by CAA, 42 and Felker Toczek.
