Secret Wars 2015 – What’cha Reading’s Layman’s Guide

Secret Wars 2015 - What'cha Reading's Layman's Guide

This Summer the Marvel Universe is coming to an End…. Welcome to Secret Wars! Spinning out of  events in Avengers, New Avengers and Avengers World, Secret Wars is a result of Universal Incursions that have been destroying realities in a domino effect across the multiverse.  The final remnants of various realities have been pulled together into one planet. There is no more Marvel Universe… Only Battle World!

This Epic event is not only the end, its also the beginning of the New Marvel Universe! With some titles ending, some being re-named, and new ones popping in to tie into Secret Wars can make collecting and ordering a little tricksy. Well here’s’s attempt to end the confusion:

The main story, by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, takes place in Secret Wars an eight issue mini-series put out twice a month from May to August. It has two tie-in mini-series expanding on the characters and realms of Battleworld, starring lesser-shown characters:

Secret Wars: Battle World #1-4
Secret Wars: Journal #1-5

Author’s Suggested Previous Reading:

New Avengers #1

At the very least : New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman

Medium Involvement: Fantastic Four, Avengers, New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman, Infinity

Dedicated to the Event: Secret Wars (Original) Fantastic Four & FF by Jonathan Hickman, Avengers vs X-Men, Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers World, Infinity, by Jonathan Hickman,  Original Sin, AXIS

Extreme: Secret Wars (Original), SHIELD by Jonathan Hickman Fantastic Four & FF by Jonathan Hickman, Avengers vs X-Men, Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers World, Infinity by Jonathan Hickman , Original Sin, and AXIS and the original stories to all the Nostalgic and New Worlds titles listed below

Now let’s talk about the titles not affected by the Secret War event. Most of them are relatively new starts, or finishing arcs that are detached from the regular Marvel Universe goings-ons. Presumably, these stories will continue and finish, with the assumption of the events within taking place BEFORE Secret Wars:

Antman, Daredevil, Deathlok, Gamora, Groot, Guardians Team-Up, Hawkeye, Howard The Duck, Moon Knight, SHIELD, Silk, SpiderGwen, SpiderWoman, Squirrel Girl, Uncanny Avengers, Uncanny Inhumans, and Winter Soldier.

So if you have been reading these books, you’re safe. You can ride out the whole Secret Wars Event without a ripple in your pond, that is, until the arc ends and they catch up to a post Secret Wars continuity.

Now you might want to sit down. The following books are being cancelled. And it’s a lot. Now “cancelled” can mean a few things. Some of these books will continue on in spirit under new titles during the Secret Wars event, meaning new titles with the same writers, artists, and/or characters. And knowing Marvel, and the comic industry in general, the rest will be re-tooled, re-numbered and re-initiated post Secret Wars. And others… well some titles just have to get sent to the farm

So here we go:

Amazing Spiderman, Amazing X-Men, Avengers, Avengers Worlds, Angela, Black Widow, Captain America, Captain America and The Mighty Avengers, Captain Marvel, Cyclops, Deadpool, Elektra, Fantastic Four, Guardians 3000, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hulk, Inhuman, Iron Fist, Loki, Magneto, Ms. Marvel, New Avengers, Nightcrawler, Nova, Punisher, Rocket Raccon, Secret Avengers, Silver Surfer, Spiderman 2099, Starlord, Superior Iron Man, Thor, Ultimate Spideman, Uncanny X-men, Wolverines, X-men

As I said, some of these titles are being replaced by Secret Wars-centric versions of themselves. Some one-shots, Some mini -series, but rest assured, most will probably be back once Secret Wars finishes up. So fear not True Believers, your monthly Marvel mania maintains market-space:

Then there’s the Nostalgics. Parts of BattleWorld will be populated by segments of Marvel various What-ifs? Alternate Futures, Parallel Dimensions. Lots of past storylines are revisited, or a version there-of, as well as New Worlds, ideas revisited from ideas, titles and characters found in Marvel’s glorious past. About Author

Trained by the Four-Color wizard, Hagan, in all things comic-booky, young Robert took to the streets of New York, dragging his large bespectacled head from comic shop to comic shop, absorbing, learning… knowing…. Until a very delayed pubescent spurt in his early thirties when the tumescent lump of comic knowledge burst forth, rupturing into nonsensical rants about Jack Kirby, superhero related tattoos, questionable cosplay activities, worshiping Jim Starlin as a prophet, and courting the young lady working in his local comic shop. Now he is just mad…roaming the streets late at night while walking his dog, plotting and preparing to unleash more comic-booky goodness on an unsuspecting world. He likes bread. The food. He thinks the band is crap. *Hey wanna freak Bob out? Come follow him on twitter (@dyrewolf1218), he's totally new to it and suspects it may be black magic...* - Chuck the editor monkey

This is a Thing of Beauty. Seriously, Bob. A really comprehensive guide in a nice and easy to follow format, which is much needed.

No word on what Ms. Marvel or Loki might turn into yet? Those are my staples.
