It’s interesting to have a cross over between a character who originated in the 1940s and a character created in the 1980s as an homage to the 1940s. In the hands of Mark Waid the team up works.
I have to admit that this is one of those times when I’m one of those people, “I never read the comics but I loved the movies!”. Sorry, but it’s true. The Spirit and The Rocketeer are two films I love but I never have read any of the source material, I’m somewhat embarrassed to say.
Still I suspect Waid’s comic is a decent rendering of them both. It has a nice pulpy feel to it but with more than a bit of tongue in cheek. This is definitely not a comic that takes itself too seriously. The female characters are hysterical, the men obviously live in fear of displeasing them. They control via their feminine wiles.
The Spirit gets caught up in a case because of his girlfriend. A friend of her father’s has been murdered but his body turns up hundreds of miles away in California even though he was just in Central City the night before. Coincidentally his body was found by The Rocketeer’s lady friend. The Spirit, his girlfriend and her father (who is the police commissioner) all head out to the coast. There of course they encounter The Rocketeer and his cast of characters. They even have the obligatory meet-up battle.
This is a fun book. Its one of those really rare occasions when I wanted more pages when I got to the end. I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I will definitely continue picking this up. You should too, I highly recommend it.
