Wolves, from Becky Cloonan, is a self-published 24 page black and white short story. It sold out its first 1,000 copy run in 2 months! I had never heard of it before but I’m very glad I was shown this moving and thoughtful piece at Midtown Comics during Becky Cloonan and Brian Wood’s signing February 8th.

Wolves follows the story of an unnamed hunter charged with the simple task of killing a wolf, something he accomplished in the past, but this time he fears something’s different. His journey isn’t just through the forest or a journey to slay a beast, it’s a journey of the heart and one that will break his.

Becky Cloonan has written a story which is a drama, a mystery, a horror, a love story, all the things that make a story into a classic. Her artwork is showcased perfectly in this format, the black and white showing off her wonderful eye for detail. I literally cannot recommend this book highly enough, I’ve read it multiple times since February 8th and I’m sure I’ll read it many, many more times in the future.
