Last week saw the long-awaited release of Marvel Comics Thor Annual #1. Most excitingly, it features the writing debut of CM Punk (ECW, Ring of Honor, WWE, and now UFC) and has been the major selling point for the book. Many have been wondering how the wrestler/fighter/entertainer would handle the writing duties and fans finally have an answer – its possibly one of the most fun God of Thunder stories!
CM Punk’s “Thor Annual” story chronicles a moment in the young Avenger’s life well before he was worthy of lifting the hammer. He’s up to his usual shenanigans of drinking mead and partying with his friends when Mephisto arrives with a particular challenge – “a contest of drinks.” Loki, being the trickster that he is, interferes and alters the brews. The “drink the devil under the table” aspect of the story is substantially over the top, but it works in a playful way as it feels true to who Thor is. CM Punk gets creative with his drink names and each brew has a fun nod to the Marvel Universe (The Gamma Slamma, Cosmic Ray, and Ultimate Drunkifier).
The “Young Thor” Tales of Thunder story by CM Punk is perfectly complimented by Chew artist Rob Guillory. The story has a cartoonish look (I love cartoons!) and is presented in a great way that feels like a classic Thor story that was previously untold. CM Punk exhibits that he is quite adept at writing an enjoyable story and shows that he is no stranger to the Marvel Universe of characters. It’s quite impressive how many characters he fits into the story (Volstagg, Hogun, Frost Giants, Hercules, Elves…) and it matches perfectly with his statement that he wanted “to write a short, entertaining story people of all ages would enjoy.”
In speaking with CM Punk at the Challengers Comics signing in Chicago, he was polite enough to ask “it wasn’t too much?” when it came to the drinking aspect of the book. This was a story he had wanted to tell for a while, and while drinking is one of Thor’s favorite past times, it isn’t for CM Punk. The “Best in the World” wrestler turned UFC fighter is a self-proclaimed “straight-edge.” He even has the tattoo of straight edge on his stomach! He may not drink or use drugs, but he definitely gets who the God of Thunder is. This is an exciting time for Punk as he finished his first scrimmage in the UFC a few days ago (while sporting a Ninja Turtles “Drug Free is the Way to Be” shirt) and is working with the House of Ideas on more titles to write. “Punisher is number one with a bullet” and he went on to say that the story is coming.
Even if you’re not a fan of wrestling, it’s hard not to like CM Punk. He’s one of the best, no, he’s the “best since day one.” It’s great to see him enter the comic book community as he’s a huge fan, himself. CM Punk has some exciting things in store for fans of Marvel Comics and it couldn’t come at a better time as they get ready to restart their universe. And what better way to restart than with the best!
“Thor Annual” #1 gets five out of five stars!
