Originally published by Dark Horse in 2005, Revelations (now from Boom!) is the type of comic I love. It’s Columbo meets Sam Spade, poured through a Da Vinci Code strainer.
The Vatican, a murder, a cover-up. And Charlie Northern, of Scotland Yard, has been asked by an old friend to look into it. Problems? Tons. Charlie’s a lapsed Catholic with church issues and there’s way more going on with this case than just a simple murder.
In the tradition of Columbo and the like we see some of the murder as it occurs, not enough to figure out the who what and why though. The plot is straight forward murder mystery with a conspiracy thrown in. Paul Jenkins crafts both well, he even gives us ample static between Charlie and several members of the Vatican which needs to be there for this story to flow right. He also gave Charlie an internal monologue, a device which if used incorrectly in a muder/crime story can be disastrous (or at the very least trite or boring) but in Mr Jenkins capable hands gives us such gems as:
“Having left the church kicking and screaming these many years ago, my best position would be described as a prolapsed catholic”
and one I that actually made me laugh out loud…
“…we’re shown towards a servant’s entrance by a wrinkled old retainer I have decided to name scrotum…”
So, yea not reallly an all-ages book.
Humberto Ramos’ art style is of two minds, backgrounds and inanimate objects are very realistic and detailed, while people are stylized. It really works well. And the colors (done by Eonardo Olea & Edgar Delgado) make everything jump off the page.
This is a mini-series you should buy. Who knows maybe Boom is re-releasing it because there’s another Charlie Northern story out there? Maybe? Maybe??
4 out of 5 and a strong buy this series!
