Resident Alien #0 – Another strong title from Dark Horse

The town of Patience, USA has had a murder. The town physician has been killed. It’s their first murder. Or is it the second? Well they’ve enlisted the help of the local recluse Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle to fill in for the town’s late doctor. Dr. Harry has been a mystery to the townspeople for two years now and it seems he has a very good reason.
Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle isn’t a doctor at all, at least not on our world. See Harry’s spaceship crashed on Earth three years ago and he’s been stranded, waiting to go home ever since. Now Harry’s been pulled into the day to day workings of Patience. Will he be able to keep his identity hidden? Will his love of a good mystery and his desire to solve the murder of the doctor draw him too much attention?
Issue #0 is a collection of stories that originally appeared in Dark Horse Presents. It’s a great introduction to both Harry, the town of Patience and its interesting inhabitants. Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse have come up with a likable everyman in Harry. The fact that he’s a stranger in a strange land only seems to make him more like us, more human. I find it refreshing to have an alien as a lead character who isn’t bent on Earth’s destruction or the subjugation of its peoples.
I’m looking forward to following the mystery and hoping these four issues aren’t the last we see of Harry. What do you think? Feel like coming along?
