Yesterday, fans got their first look at the DC Comics character Red Tornado as he appears on the CBS series Supergirl. Played by British-Israeli actor Iddo Goldberg (Peaky Blinders), you could see the photo below:
The character of Red Tornado, while portrayed as a villain for the series, was a hero in the comic books. Created by Gardner Fox and Dick Dillon, he first appeared in “Mystery in Space” issue 61 and made his first outing as Red Tornado in “Justice League of America” issue 64.
CBS describes T.O. Morrow aka Red Tornado as “The most advanced android the world has ever seen. Designed by scientist T.O. Morrow for the U.S. Army as the ultimate superweapon, he soon becomes sentient, posing a grave danger to National City — including the people Supergirl cares about most.”
Since the image has released, certain fans have taken to the message boards and comments to sound off on Red Tornado’s screen appearance. While he does bear a resemblance to The Vision (Paul Bettany) as he appeared in this year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the character of Red Tornado does predate Marvel’s Vision. There’s a fun little article exploring “Which Came First: The Vision or The Red Tornado?” which I recommend giving a read. Character similarities happen all too often within comic books and they seem to create especially divisive arguments amongst fans of DC Comics and Marvel. Many times the relationship shared between a character such as The Red Tornado and The Vision could be due to a product of what was popular at the time of his/her/its creation. In this case, Red Tornado appeared 2 months before The Vision, but both were written roughly around the same time.
What are your thoughts on The Red Tornado as he appears on CBS’s Supergirl? Do you like it? Do you wish he retained the yellow/gold arrow on his forehead? Feel free to sound off below. Personally, I’m interested in seeing how this will translate:
