Rat Queens #8 – How Do I Love Thee?

Cover  Tyler Jenkins

Oh Rat Queens, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. There is no pretending that Rat Queens is not an absolute favorite among myself and my Geek Girl Sisterhood. They are our spirit animals in all things. While we may not kill and maim with swords in real life we do often do the same things with our sharp tongues and are quite proud of those skills. The Rat Queens live life on their own terms and as we explore their back stories a bit more they also seem to be somewhat outcast from the lives they were born into.

If you haven’t been reading Rat Queens (what the hell is wrong with you?) you should know they are basically a band of adventurers who kill bad guys for fun and profit. They are decidedly unappreciated by the people around them but at least they have each other. Each brings her own talent and skill to the group and while they don’t like to show it publicly they are dead loyal to each other. They are also foul-mouthed, rowdy and love wine, women, men and song, well bloodshed more than song, but you get the picture.

We’re a couple of issues into the most recent arc. Which has us exploring some of the Queens’ pasts. Particularly Dee, as the current threat comes from her neck of the woods. Can you say tentacle monsters? Issue 8 explores Violet’s former life. Back when she still rocked her beard. We get a glimpse of her family and the social sphere she came from. I’m greatly enjoying these forays into their pasts and look forward to seeing how it all ties into present. The writing is always top-notch and for a book that appears to just be a chicks’ D and D adventure, it goes so much deeper than you’d ever expect. The art is fantastic. Lively and colorful like the ladies themselves.

Rat Queens # 8 gets 5 out of 5 starts for letting us get to know the Queens even better. If you haven’t read it before you can start with issue 6 where the new arc begins or go back to the beginning with Rat Queens Vol 1 Sass and Sorcery which collects issues 1-5 and is well worth the $9.99.

About Author

Mother, knitter, writer, bookseller, and geek by day but at night I revert to the 10 year old that I really am. I spend my spare time plotting world domination using an army of knitters. Got to keep the weavers in check.
