Princess Ugg Volume 1 AND Issue 5 – Jump on this title!

I’m back, after a brief hiatus. Now, onto comics!

I’ve been a huge fan of Ted Naifeh’s Oni’s book, Princess Ugg. If you haven’t been reading up until now, this is your lucky day – both Volume 1 of Princess Ugg, containing Issues 1-4, AND Issue 5 hit shelves TODAY. Get caught up on your Ugg in one shot!

In Volume 1, we meet Ülga of Grimmerian; a barbarian princess, happiest when she’s swinging her axe and taking down a frost giant or six. She made her mom a promise though – to acknowledge that there is more to life than war, to embrace life, and to seek peace. So here she is, enrolled at a princess finishing school full of girly mean girls that make the Disney Princesses look positively butch. Ugg doesn’t fit in at all, and she quickly finds herself the object of taunts and cruel jokes. See? Even a barbarian badass can be bullied!

Princess Ugg Volume 1 AND Issue 5 - Jump on this title!

And that’s what I love about this book – not that she’s bullied, but that girls – tweens, who are in the prime zone for this kind of insanity – can see themselves in Ülga. She wants to be so much more than she is; she’s struggling with her identity, and she’s trying to fit in with a group of girls who just want to make her feel like an outcast. On the battlefield? Ülga is front and center with a battleaxe, confident in her skills. In finishing school? Her self-esteem is sapped, but she never gives up.

Issue #5 gives us a new story arc, a perfect jumping on point for new readers who have a basic idea of the story. Ülga is still at the school, and while some of the girls have relaxed their attitude toward her, the Queen Bee, Julifer, is still awful. But Ülga has other things on her mind at the moment, whether it’s the group that just attacked the caravan carrying her and her classmates to a field trip, or the whispers of war coming back to Grimmeria.

About Author

Rosemary Kiladitis is a children’s librarian, a mom, and a proud fangirl/nerdgirl. She did her homework while watching reruns of the 1966 Batman series, which led to her longstanding relationship with the Bat, and she’s pretty sure that Barbara Gordon is the real reason she went to library school. She loves superheroes, supervillains, and is secretly married to Hellboy. Or Loki. She can’t remember, but it’s one of them.
