Wow, I’ve read/reviewed a lot of disturbing books over the years but I think this was one of the scariest, creepiest book I have had the goose-bump filled pleasure of reading.
I never read Joe Hill’s New York Times bestselling novel NOS4A2, but I’ve been a devout fan of the Locke & Key series so when this one came out I figured I’d give it a go. Charles Paul Wilson’s artwork just sealed the deal. His work on The Stuff of Legend for Th3rd World Studios has been amazing.
This stand-alone tale is an origin story of sorts, the origin of the terrifying funhouse world of Christmasland and the mad man who rules there: Charlie Talent Manx III. A man who lead such a horrible life, so sad and wrong that he actually slips the bonds of reality and becomes a monster. This study in insanity is so well written, so intricately weaved I don’t want to spoil it. As you read Charles’ story, watching each horror he suffers as he grows up, you know where it’s going, you know you’re experiencing the creation of a psychopath, but you can’t look away. This peek into his world (and mind) is horrifying.
Any (and every) horror fan needs to read this one. Total 5 out of 5, story, art, the design, the whole package. Buy this book.
