There’s always excitement when a big name artist and/or writer has something new coming out. Especially someone of the caliber of George Perez. His runs on Wonder Woman and The New Teen Titans certainly solidified him in my mind as someone whose work I enjoyed consistently. With this in mind I greatly looked forward to his new series, Sirens, from Boom! Studios. I am sad to say it did not live up to my expectations.
The Sirens appear to be a sisterhood of warrior women scattered throughout time and space. We seem them in Iceland in the 1100s, in Rome at the start of the Christian era, late 1800s western America and various other shorter stops along the way. In between the time hops there is a rescue mission going on. A woman called Highness is imprisoned and being sold to the highest bidder for their pleasures. All of the timelines coalesce as the rescue mission is implemented. It is then that we get some sense of who the Sirens are.
I wanted to love this book, I really did. Time traveling, warrior women? This is totally my kind of thing, but while the premise is good the execution is less so. I found it muddled in every sense of the word. It took me about halfway through the book to get a comfortable grip on what was going on and even then I was not sure how it all fit. I found the art added to my confusion. Was I looking at one character across all these timelines or many? Frankly, I’m still not sure. There was too much going on in each page for my liking and the coloring seemed to mute the lines a bit too much. Making the art seem as muddled as the story. In fairness, a time travel story is always something tough to jump into. Especially with pitches back and forth between timelines. Once the story becomes more linear it may well improve, certainly the plot is interesting enough to work with.
I’m giving Sirens #1 2.5 out of 5 stars. I’m hopeful we’ll get to the meat of the story and things will improve but for now I’m disappointed.
