Browncoats, like Goonies, never say die. Whether fighting the Alliance in Joss Whedon’s creations Firefly and Serenity or fighting the studio powers that be to resurrect the prematurely and tragically canceled show, against all odds they keep going. This means that even if there is no chance for a Serenity sequel, they will find a way to continue the adventures of their favorite family of misfits and rebels. Now that never ending loyalty has been rewarded with a new six issue miniseries written by Zach Whedon and Executive Produced by Joss himself.

The new series picks up about 10 months from the end of Serenity. We begin by seeing the effects the revelation about Miranda have had on the population and the media in the colonies. Not surprisingly the effects are not as clear cut as one might expect but are complicated and varied.

The Alliance is of course on the hunt for our big damn heroes. They want someone to pay for the upheaval this is causing. Who better than Captain Mal Reynolds and his cohorts. The Alliance also seem to have a have a surprising ally on their side.

Where are the crew of Serenity? On their ship of course. On the run and just trying to get by as always.

I am a Browncoat so I was practically salivating for this book to come out. So much so that I think it was a little anti-climactic for me. Still I enjoyed it. I loved seeing my old friends and how they’re fairing. There’s some happy things but this is the ‘verse we know and love so even though we did sort of win in the end, there is no happy ending. Just the continuing fight to survive it seems. Just the way it should be.

I’m giving Serenity – Leaves on the Wind 4 out of 5. This was definitely a set up issue but all the pieces Whedon has put in place promise a fascinating and fun story by the end.

I’m honestly just happy to be flying with my favorite crew again.
