Papercutz is releasing Legends of Chima vol 1 on May 6th to retailers, Comics shops get it April 30th!
I had never read or watched any Lego Chima before and knowing kids’ properties I figured I’d be lost. Nothing could be further from the truth. The book is straightforward morality plays. Sure there are an amazing amount of words you’ve never heard before but the lingo isn’t so thick as to be off-putting.
Here’s the synopsis from the Lego Chima site:
For a thousand years, animal tribes have ruled the land of CHIMA. Lions, crocodiles, eagles, wolves, gorillas, ravens, rhinos and bears lived in peace. They played and worked together, cooperated and prospered – until the outbreak of the CHIMA conflicts.
Once a pristine, natural paradise, CHIMA has become a battle ground for eight animal tribes. Best friends are now enemies. The animals fight for control of a natural resource called CHI, a powerful element that is both a source of life and potential destruction. Only a few brave heroes in CHIMA understand the true nature of CHI, and the possible downfall of CHIMA that will result from its misuse. Their stories, and the stories of those who seek to destroy them, are known as… THE LEGENDS OF CHIMA.
The art is well done, the characters obviously Lego but drawn with fluidity and expression. The stories are simple but not dumbed down and the characters have understandable reactions and motivations. In a world of children’s books that would bore my kids to tears, or are ridiculously expensive, Lego Legends of Chima is a refreshing addition to my family’s library. Take a look and see what you think…
