I know vigilantism is wrong, I do, but I grew up on Death Wish and Dirty Harry movies so I can’t deny their appeal. The satisfaction found in an eye for an eye is something built into our DNA no matter how much we try to rise above it. Couple that with the dissatisfaction and outright mistrust many of us have for the justice system and you have an inner Mad Max just screaming to get out. Luckily most of us know that would be a bad path to travel but that doesn’t mean we can’t live vicariously through fictional characters. Jennifer Blood definitely brought out my blood lust with her mission to rid the world of evildoers.
Jennifer Blood was a wife and a mother who had trained since her teenage years to get vengeance on her uncles for the death of her father. As she completes her life’s mission things go too far and she loses her family. The new mini-series picks up with her having laid Jennifer Blood to rest.
She’s in hiding while she tries to figure out what comes next. Unfortunately it seems someone has taken up her mantle and is killing people while disguised as Jennifer. That just won’t do. Jennifer sets out to find out exactly who is masquerading as her and to what end.
I didn’t read the original Jennifer Blood series but after two issues of this mini I want to go back and do just that. Jennifer is screwed up and badass which makes her my kind of character. She’s obviously paid a high price for single-minded need to wipe out her father’s brothers but like an addict she can’t stop there. Once she gets back in the game she’s obviously where she wants to be. The story is engaging, the writing is tight and page-turning. The art is bold and colorful while getting across the darkness that underlines the violence.
I’m giving Jennifer Blood: Born Again 4 out of 5 stars. I’d slice and dice bad guys with her anytime.
