How I loved Spy vs Spy. It was my favorite part of Mad magazine. Seeing the trouble those two could get into trying to catch each other. Stories told without on word of dialogue. Yet it never felt like the words were missing. Everything was there in the visuals. These are the type of stories told in Monster’s and Other Stories.
The three stories collected in the graphic novel, Co!, Birds, and Monsters! are all just told through images. Not a word of dialogue is written. They are horror stories told with humor. I found myself smiling at all the little horrific twists and turns. Not once did I wish there were words to guide me along.
In Co! a farmer and his pigs have a close encounter of the third kind. Then things get weird. In Birds two birds expect to have a normal day at the office, unfortunately todays visitor bears and uncanny resemblance to one of them and appears to have been killed. Monster! is something along the lines of a classic monster movie but even this one has a twist all its own.
I thoroughly enjoyed Monsters! & Other Stories. The classic cartoon style of art is still way above your Sunday funnies. The stories are horror but they don’t feel dark. As I mentioned I smiled and chuckled through parts of each of them. This has a warm, familiar feel in the way it’s drawn and the stories told. It’s definitely worth checking out.

I’d give “Monsters! & Other Stories” 4 out of 5 stars.
