How many times. How many times have I awoken in a field, in my underwear, with no memory of where I am or how I got there… ahem
But I digress… The Field, from Ed Brisson and Simon Roy, is 128 pages of surreal terror and pretty much everyone’s worst nightmare. Alone, stranded, at the mercy of some twisted psycho, how would you cope? How far would you go to save yourself?
One of the greatest aspects of fiction the likes of the Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks, or movies like Kalifornia and Natural Born Killers, is that surreal absurd otherworldly logic they immerse us in. That weird feeling you get while watching that you (and the protagonist) are the only ones who see how crazy all this is. The Field conveys that strange panic-filled unease very well…
When he gets in that car, and lord knows there isn’t much of a choice, things get even weirder as the gun-toting meth-fueled Bible salesman takes him on a harrowing killing spree through small-town craziness. You like your books tense and freaky? Then this one’s right up your alley!
