from IDW:

“I’ve always loved the mid-century habit of retelling of Japanese Samurai stories as American westerns (and vice-versa). They were all simple tales of redemption and ambiguity cast in vastly different worlds. I wondered what would happen if you took that combination and refashioned it again with elements of fantasy and Science Fiction. I thought you might wind up with a modern and compellingly different hybrid…” said John Raffo, “but as I started hacking away I realized this was a story that had to be told visually. Darby Pop and their incredibly talented artists helped me develop this bit of oddball alchemy into what I think is a beautiful comic series.”

I too love the retelling of classic samurai tales as westerns, god knows the Clint Eastwood westerns from the 60’s and 70’s are some of my all time favorite movies to date. And retelling classic tropes in a futuristic setting isn’t unprecedented either (Outland = High Noon anyone?). So was this a slam dunk? Not really. I’ve only read the preview so far, hoping to do a full review this week, but so far I’m getting way too much of a Road Warrior vibe. Now that could just be the let’s show how bad-ass Cray is prologue, guess I’ll have to read it and see.

What do you think? Is this one on your pull list this week?
