Back to action! Lionsgate Studios has officially announced that the new Power Rangers movie has officially begun production in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The story remains the same as the original television program where five teens from Angel Grove are selected to be heroes and save the world from the evil Rita Repulsa and her monsters. The cast so far features Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, R.J. Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky Gomez a.k.a. Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zach the Black Ranger and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. The film will be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), written by John Gatins (Real Steel), Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Zach Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class and Thor) and Max Landis (Chronicle). Haim Saban, the man behind the original Power Rangers will be one of the producers along with Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault In Our Stars, Maze Runner franchise). Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games franchise, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Brent O’Connor (Warcraft) will serve as executive producers.
I was skeptical about this film at first but sSeeing the team behind it is giving me comfort knowing it is in good hands. There are various other members from such hit movies as The Revenant, Straight Outta Compton and The Dark Knight. It will most likely be marketed to teens and young adults considering most of the crew has background in such movies but at the same time there are crew members from Marvel and DC so hopefully there will be more adult-oriented action sprinkled in. It has also been announced that 300 and Avengers: Age of Ultron soundtrack composer Brian Tyler has signed on to score the movie. He is a great composer and I very much enjoyed the soundtracks to both of those films.
With production officially underway, we here at What’cha Reading will be watching this film closely for new updates from the set. I am eager to see how the production and development of this movie unfolds. The crew seems like they know what they are doing based on their past projects and we get to see a new cast which is what the Power Rangers franchise has done from day one. The movie is set to be released on March 24, 2017. What do you think about the news on the movie so far? Do you feel this movie will respect the original series or just be another remake? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
