This Wednesday 11/25 Dreamwork’s Penguins of Madagascar, those para-military birds of a feather, flock to a comic store near you! I am a huge fan of the show and was really looking forward to seeing if their very distinct voices and personalities would translate to the page.
I needn’t have worried, Skippers trade mark “just smile and wave boys” is present and if you’re a fan you hear his dulcet tones barking orders at Private, Kowalski, and of course Rico, you won’t be disappointed.
This was a great example of the durability of great writing, this reads (and feels) just like the cartoon even though the art has a flatter simpler palate than the show. I’m not knocking the art by any means, it’s simply a different style choice. The characters and their environment are just as recognizable and enjoyable.
We’ve got two stories plus some activity pages and a poster! This is some comic! Here’s a quick preview of the first story “The Great Drain Robbery”. With a script from Jai Nitz and Art by Lawrence Etherington, and lettering by Jimmy Betancourt/Comicraft…
And then after a page or two of puzzles and whatnot we have “Night Out”, from Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning with Anthony Williams on pencils, Dan Davis’ inks, and Robin Smith furnishing the colors, lettering by Jimmy Betancourt/Comicraft. This is the slicker looking story but I have to admit I enjoyed the look of Drain Robbery a bit more. The darker palate seems to suit these characters, where as Night Out reminded me, just a bit mind you, of the Animainiacs cartoon from way back when…
Penguins of Madagascar gets a 5 out of 5 for being exactly what it should be. Fun, funny, with the characters we want to see doing the things we love to see them doing. I’ll be picking this up (for my kids of course!) How about you, will it make the cut this Wednesday?
