With only one week until the mid-season finale, the magic is getting darker in both Camelot and Storybrooke. In the finale of last week’s episode, “Birth” we saw Emma (Jennifer Morrison) try to save Hook (Colin O’ Donoghue) from dying by using her magic. While she succeeds, she also turns him into a dark one and transports him back to Camelot. This week, we learn what the dark magic does not only to Hook, but everyone around him.
“Broken Heart” opens in Storybrooke, where Hook is using a dreamcatcher on Emma, but her memory is wiped clean. He gets a flashback to when he was being transported by dark magic to Camelot, literally seeing his life flash before his eyes, revealing all of the evil things he had done up until now. When it’s all over, we see Emma laying on the couch when Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), Regina (Lana Parilla) and David (Josh Dallas) enter and ask her why she turned Hook dark. Emma snaps at them saying she did it because she loved him and she knew if any of them were in that situation they would have done the same for the ones they loved. Mary Margaret suggests using dreamcatchers to retrace the steps of everyone since Hook went dark. When David looks for the dreamcatchers, they are all gone, taken by Hook. Henry (Jared Gilmore) walks in as the group is discussing what to do next when Emma asks him to take off the cuff that restricts her magic. Henry refuses and is angry at Emma for lying to everyone about the dark magic and Excalibur. The group goes out on their own, leaving Emma behind where she is guarded by Merida (Amy Manson). Unfortunately, the darkness has destroyed the love Hook has for Emma who he is also out to harm. He visits the house but Merida is no match for his power and he tells Emma, despite her begging him to stop and fight the darkness, that he will hurt her the way she hurt him.
Now that Hook is a dark one, he will stop at nothing to get revenge on Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) for cutting his hand off aboard his ship many years ago. The time comes for Hook and Rumple to end their feud once and for all with a duel aboard Hook’s ship. Before they he goes off to fight, Rumple promises Belle (Emilie de Ravin) that he will be a better, more honest man to her. He tells her if he wins, he will wait for her at the well where they got married. If she does not show up, he will understand. Hook heals Rumple’s limp as not to have too much of an advantage. They fight and Rumple stabs Hook but it does no damage. Hook throws Rumple to the ground and is about to kill him when Rumple pulls a rope and hits Hook with a pulley, knocking him out. Hook disappears off the ship in retreat but Rumple is injured. He waits at the well and Belle appears but it’s not for the reason he thought. Belle tells him she can’t be with him anymore because she can’t take not knowing when he’s lying and when he’s telling the truth.
Emma goes to Henry for help but this time he accepts and apologizes for what he said to her as he releases the cuff. Henry tells Emma the best way to find the dreamcatchers is to get a locator spell and apply it to anything a dreamcatcher is made of. The plan works as they find the dreamcatchers and use them on themselves, Mary Margaret, David and Regina. Emma knows what Hook is going to do. She rushes to put one of the dreamcatchers in a memory erase potion only to unleash dark magic through Storybrooke and Camelot. She doesn’t say what Hook will do, but the audience sees it; Hook summons Nimue (Caroline Ford) and the dark ones to Storybrooke.
Before we leave Storybrooke and head to Camelot, we must talk about Zelena (Rebecca Mader). The last time we saw her, she had just given birth to Robin Hood’s (Sean Maguire) baby when she is kidnapped by Emma. She breaks out with Hook’s help and accompanies him to confront Emma. This week we see her visiting the baby but the baby is gone. Regina tells Zelena she and Robin have the baby protected and will keep her away from Zelena as long as she keeps acting the way she does. Zelena goes to Robin’s apartment where he tells her she can only see the baby when he or Regina are around. Regina tells her that she was going down the same road until she adopted Henry and knew she had to change her ways for him.
As active as things are in Storybrooke, Camelot is getting its share of action as well. The spirit of Rumplestiltskin is guiding Hook, as much as he tries to ignore it, on the path of darkness. As the group seeks help from Merlin (Elliot Knight), Hook and Emma seek each other. They meet each other and Emma hopes to convince Hook to change by telling him everything they have to look forward to together in Storybrooke. Unfortunately for Emma, it doesn’t work because Hook calls her out on a lie she told about Excalibur. She had previously told Hook she didn’t know where it was yet she had it on or near her the whole time. She hands him Excalibur, promises she’ll help him defeat the darkness in both of them, then kisses him. Emma thinks she may have gotten through to Hook when they visit Merlin but she was tricked. Hook, accompanied by the spirit of Nimue, takes Merlin’s heart. He has cast a revenge spell and Emma pleads with him not to go through with it for she is his happy ending, not his revenge on Rumplestiltskin. Hook doesn’t care, crushing Merlin’s heart and killing the one chance they had at breaking the spell.
With next week being the mid-season finale, it’s only logical to have the battle against dark magic come to a head. I personally cannot wait to see what the writers and crew have in store for next week. I enjoyed this episode because the majority of it stayed in Storybrooke as opposed to past episodes splitting time between both worlds; staying in one world more than the other helps the episode flow. Making Hook summon all of the dark ones was a great call because it sets up an end-all battle and hopefully answers any questions the audience may have had over the course of the season.
