Often things beloved in childhood are darker than we perceive as youngsters. In fact many are rewritten to be palatable to children. No little girl would want to group up to be Princess Ariel if she knew the mermaid loses the prince and dies in the end, would she? It seems Frosty the Snowman has kept some secrets from us as well.
In Frosty: Twas the Night Before the Apocalypse Frosty tells his buddies at the bar all about a Christmas alien invasion. It seems the aliens have deemed us unworthy and want to remake us. It comes down to a girl and an elf to save us. Sounds like an unbeatable team. The elves always win, right?
While Frosty was released in November, the creative team behind it are running a Kickstarter to “expand the universe” of Frosty and the aliens. Here is part of their pitch:
January 16, 2014/St. Louis, MO – As the childhood song promises, he’ll be back again someday…and this version of FROSTY is back with an intergalactic universe full of aliens, elves, space monsters, robo-babes and more! Thanks to their FROSTY EXPANDED UNIVERSE Kickstarter campaign, Dead of Night Entertainment and Iron Dead Studioshave taken their multi-media project into the next phase of science fiction storytelling. Having reached their goal less than halfway through the campaign, fans of “FROSTY: ‘Twas the Night Before the Apocalypse” now have access to trading cards and a forthcoming collectible card game experience. With less than 2 weeks left, they are on their way to hitting their 2nd stretch goal upgrade, adding another 9 card expansion to the current set of 27. Akers has found that “Kickstarter is a great networking tool. Not only do you get the additional exposure, there’s the added benefit of financial support from your target audience. Over 90% of the funding has come from complete strangers. This campaign certainly opened doors for future relationships with top-notch printing companies.”
The story looks like fun and the art is pretty damn impressive. It has just the right dark, twisted humor that can make this type of story really work and it seems they have a lot of interesting ideas to make it an interesting franchise.
