I have loved Hexed for awhile now. I discovered it in a graphic novel bin at a Superheroes for Hospice sale. I was the first one to stand and cheer when I heard Boom! Studios was reviving it and I nearly made a fool of myself at BookExpo when Michael Alan Nelson told me there was a YA novel out (he was amazingly kind as I fangirled all over him).
And now it’s over and I am bereft.
The final issue of Hexed is now in stores. The story has come full circle. It’s so complete in fact, that it ties in beautifully with the aforementioned novel, Hexed: The Sisters of Witchdown. If you’ve been reading, you’ll know Lucifer’s hex has been leading her down this path. Now that she’s taken it we see what will become of her. If you haven’t read any of the series I don’t want to spoil any of the secrets because letting them unfold as you go is far more enjoyable.
The twelfth issue was completely satisfying. It was definitely poignant. There were tears as I read it, but they were good tears. Lucifer has come a long way and it is a good feeling to be there with her at the end of the journey. Nelson has invested so much heart into what could have been just a Buffy clone that Lucifer is a living breathing person in my world. I also think the best stories have a beginning, middle and an end and the best writers know the end from the beginning. That’s what I’m feeling with this story. Lucifer was always going to end up here and we get the pleasure of going to there with her. The art, as always, is on point. Fully complimenting the story and getting across the magical nature of the Aether as well as being more concrete when we’re back in the physical world.
I went into this comic dreading the end but once I finished I remembered how satisfying a full story is. That’s why we love books. We go through the whole arc and get closure at the end. As much as I’ll miss hanging with Lucifer every month I’m content because of that closure.
I’m giving Hexed #12 five out of five stars. I’m also giving the series as a whole five out of five. Now that it’s over do yourself a favor and pick it up in order starting with Hexed: Sisters of Witchdown, then the original miniseries collection and finally the entire Boom! run. You’ll be glad you did.
