Anyone reading WhatchaReading for the past year knows that WhatchaReading Central has our own little group of Rat Queens: Roe, Nancy, Julie, and Frenchie have taken the book and the characters to our hearts, along with anyone on the book. So when word reached WhatchaReading HQ that Rat Queen artist Stjepan Sejic was stepping down because of health reasons, our first thoughts were with Sejic and his family.
Stjepan jumped into the Rat Queens pool earlier this year on the heels of Roc Upchurch’s departure. We instantly loved his artwork and his innate feel for the characters and their world. While he has promised to do covers for the series through issue #15, he is stepping down from story art, telling the CBR forums that “Rat Queens fans deserve better than a delay after delay on such a wonderful book”.
Rat Queens issue #11 cover by Sepjic
Picking up art duties is Tess Fowler, who I LOVE. Rat Queens fans will know her as the artist who gave us Braga’s stand-alone issue earlier this year, which was easily one of the best issues of any comic I’ve read in 2015. The Queens are also adding a colorist to their glorious band, with Tamra Bonvillain joining the title. Bonvillain has worked with Kurtis Wiebe before, on a book called Pisces, which I’ve not read (yet), but check out this breathtaking color work.
Tess and Tamra will take over as series artist and colorist, respectively, with issue #11 (Diamond ID: MAR150504), due to hit stores on August 12th. Retailers, the final order cutoff date is July 20th, so make sure to stock enough issues!
We send our best wishes to Stjepan Sejic for a full and speedy recovery. And thank you. Thank you so much for your time and dedication to Rat Queens.
