Two of the best days of the week for DC fans, and for those that enjoy good television, would undoubtedly be Tuesdays and Wednesdays. CW has brought fans two consecutive nights of shows, “The Flash” and “Arrow.” Both shows, set in the same universe, have done a great job at presenting fully realized, true to the spirit yet original versions of some of the most beloved of DC Comics characters. There is one character, featured on “Arrow”, that has stirred up many fans and will most certainly have people talking after tonight’s episode. Not Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), but Black Canary!
For those that watched the first season of “Arrow”, it seemed almost a certainty that Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) would become the Canary, but after her character took a decidedly different direction than the comics, it was revealed that her sister, Sara (Caity Lotz) was the Black Canary. Sara Lance, trained by the League of Assassins, had an engaging story arc in season 2 that continued to take the Green Arrow/ Black Canary mythology to unexpected new heights. “Arrow” went from being a good show to a great one, and the writers including Andrew Kreisberg (producer of Arrow, The Flash, current writer on Green Arrow) made it clear that while they had reverence for the books, they were going to take Oliver’s journey in a new direction. Fans seemed to love it and Sara was quick to be embraced by fans overlooking the fact that it was a different Lance than the comics.
However, after the season finale and premiere of season three, it seemed abundantly clear that the producers of “Arrow” planned on taking the character of Black Canary in another direction. Without spoiling the plot and overall mystery that has driven this current season, Laurel Lance is back and we have watched her go from an intrepid, assistant d.a. to an alcoholic, to a now lost and angry trouble-maker. When Katie Cassidy was initially cast as Laurel, it was with the understanding of many fans that she would become the Black Canary. While not necessarily fitting once Caity Lotz was added to the cast, especially due to her proficient background in martial arts/parkour and other talents that scream BAMF, Cassidy’s turn as a certain member of the Birds of Prey couldn’t be written off just yet. Cassidy, taking to Instagram and showing off her superhero sized muscles and talking more openly about her training program, seems to be promising a certain comic laden path fitting for Laurel.
With the addition of J.R. Ramirez as Ted Grant (Wildcat) it seemed almost a given that Cassidy’s Laurel Lance would become the Black Canary. And just announced today, CW has exclusively revealed our first look at Katie Cassidy as the New Black Canary! We still need to wait a bit longer until we see her take over for sister, Sara Lance and replace Caity Lotz. The 10th episode of this season, “Left Behind” will certainly be an episode that you won’t want to miss!

What do you think? Are you excited to see David Cassidy’s daughter become one of the most recognizable of Green Arrow characters? Did you prefer Caity Lotz (as I did)? Or maybe you just want more of John Barrowman as Merlyn (as I do)!
“Arrow” airs on Wednsday nights at 8 P on The CW. Check your local listings.
