What if animals were given voices? I don’t mean in the “Polly want a cracker” sense, or even ala Dr. Doolittle. What if they could legitimately tell us what they were feeling? A bird of prey’s sense of superiority over the landscape, a cobra’s ability to flow like time, a dragonfly’s realization that insects would inherit everything, a housecat’s love of music…these are some of the themes that surface in Yramx’s Mute Souls.
It isn’t your typical comic—each vignette lasts only a few pages—but it is beautiful and thought-provoking. What if, rather than seeing animals as inferior to us, we could view animals as equals, or possibly even our superiors? The artwork, aside from the beautiful watercolors that delineate each new chapter, are black and white illustrations, but wonderfully detailed nonetheless and capture the spirit of each animal. It’s a unique book, and very enjoyable.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 Lightning Bolts.
