The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were back it again this week fighting Inhumans, the A.T.C.U., Hydra and whoever else stands in the way of world peace. Episode 6, titled “Among Us Hide…” opens with Dr. Andrew Garner (Blair Underwood), being rushed to the ER after surviving an attack by an associate of Hydra. He’s accompanied by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his ex-wife, Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). He gives both agents his account of the attack, which was initiated by Alex, who Dr. Garner was lead to believe was a transfer student. It turns out Alex’s real name is Werner Von Strucker, son of Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker, the Nazi founder of the first incarnation of Hydra during World War II. Coulson and May immediately suspect former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) is behind the attack as revenge for being hunted down and shot at by May and Agent Lance Hunter (Nick Blood).
Introduced this season, Lash (Matthew Willig) is a mutated being who hunts and kills Inhumans. Agent Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) is determined to know who or what Lash is after witnessing him change from a creature to a human. She herself is an Inhuman who has the capability to produce tremors, hence her codename “Quake.” Daisy and fellow agent, Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie (Henry Simmons) begin to theorize how Lash knows every move Inhumans and S.H.I.E.L.D. make. One theory that comes up is that Lash is actually an A.T.C.U. official, namely Luther Banks. Daisy, Mack and a recently put on modified duty Hunter tail Banks. It goes great until Hunter takes matter into his own hands and shoots Banks with a tranquilizer dart in broad daylight. Daisy and Mack are worried but Hunter makes a point that it gives them an easy blood sample, which turns out to be clean. Luther Banks is not Lash. However, the trio does discover a terrible practice in A.T.C.U. headquarters, which brings us back to Phil Coulson.
Agent Coulson has been trying to forge a truce, albeit an uneasy one, with the head of the A.T.C.U. Rosalind Price (Constance Zimmer). Price was on S.H.I.E.L.D.S.’s trail for helping Inhumans, and employing one in Daisy until Coulson extended the olive branch to have an ally to fight Lash. Price and Coulson are on their way to A.T.C.U.’s facilities when Price gets a call that her home is burglarized. While Coulson is waiting, he picks up on how strange it is that nothing of serious value was taken during the robbery. Price confesses she staged the phone call to avoid showing Coulson the facilities. Later on, she does and he discovers what Daisy and Mack discover: the A.T.C.U. is keeping Inhumans in a sleep state and preserving their bodies in glass boxes until a cure s found. Price says she’s doing it because she lost her husband to cancer and regretted not being able to do anything to help or save him.
Agent May is not one to extend an olive branch to anyone, especially after what happened to Andrew. She talks Agent Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse (Adrianne Palicki) into getting back into the field with her to take down Ward, Werner and the rest of Hydra. Bobbi is reluctant at first because Coulson ordered her to rehab her injuries but May tells her she is healed enough. The ladies, with Fitz’s help, start at a bank in the Cayman Islands where the Von Struckers have a safe deposit box. An alarm is tripped and when sweet-talking the guards doesn’t work, the ladies do what they do best—kick butt. They take out the guards and escape with the information they need. Werner is having doubts about Ward and calls Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe) for advice. However, Gideon isn’t who Werner thinks he is. Rather than help Werner, he tips off Ward. Ward has Werner kidnapped and kept at a mansion in Lisbon, Portugal where he is tortured. May and Morse raid the mansion where they find a half-dead Werner. They take out Ward’s Hydra goons and try to help Werner. Werner then reveals what happened in the attack on Andrew. Werner says Andrew is Lash.
Buried deep within the turbulent world of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a budding workplace love story between Agents Leo Fitz (Ian De Caestecker) and Gemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). Agent Simmons has just been rescued from being sucked up into an alien monolith and transported to a distant planet. While she was there she met a fellow survivor, Will Daniels (Dillon Casey). Will is an astronaut and lone survivor of his crew that landed on the planet. Despite her feelings for Fitz, she takes to Will to help keep her alive and to have human companionship. Fitz learns of this and is hesitant to let Simmons go back and rescue Will. He is not only afraid she won’t survive but that she’ll love Will over him.
As a fan of the Avengers-based movies, I love how this show keeps to its self while integrating the Avengers into the story from time to time. The Inhumans storyline gives the show a cemented plot again. It lost some of that plot last season with the Hydra infiltration storyline. It was good but got choppy at times with the second S.H.I.E.L.D., the government, etc. I am a fan of Lash. The purpose of S.H.I.E.L.D. is to protect the Earth from danger, especially alien danger. Lash gives them the first continuous alien threat rather than just an object being used by someone to destroy the world.
