This week we got a double dose of Marvel’s Agent Carter and it was phenomenal. The first episode, “Life of the Party” opens with Dr. Jason Wilkes (Reggie Austin) having visions of zero matter as he gradually phases in and out of appearance. Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell), still recovering from her wound, runs to him to see what is wrong. She remembers that Dr. Wilkes became solid again when he touched the zero matter on Jane Scott’s body. Agent Carter devises a plan to steal some from Whitney Frost’s (Wynn Everett) body. She approaches Chief Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) and they both agree that someone has to go in that Whitney does not know. She decides to send in Dottie Underwood (Bridget Regan). Dottie is sprung from prison by Agent Carter who is disguised as a psychiatrist. She goes undercover with Jarvis (James D’Arcy) and even though she gets what she has to from Whitney, the mission goes awry and she is captured.
In “Monsters” Dr.Wilkes helps Ana Jarvis (Lotte Verbeek) build a containment unit which will keep him solid as long as he stays in it. Agent Carter and Jarvis must find Dottie before she gets into trouble or runs away on them. Jarvis and Carter take a concussive device, the jitterbug, with them to handle any danger they may encounter while Ana stays behind with Dr. Wilkes while he is in the chamber. Things go terribly wrong as Whitney and Joe Manfredi (Ken Marino) break into the Jarvis home. Ana tries to reason with them but Whitney shoots her as Joe takes Dr. Wilkes’s body just as Agent Carter and Jarvis return with Dottie.
This season of Marvel’s Agent Carter has been a roller coaster ride and these two episodes are the highest point of the season. Calvin Chadwick (Currie Graham) tricks Whitney into seeing the council in order to trap her and her zero matter power. She is too strong and uses the zero matter power to kill him and a number of members. She then orders one of the remaining members to write a story saying those who she killed disappeared and could not be found. Whitney is one of those characters that make it so hard to decide whether you should like her or not. She is a villain but such a great villain. Wynn Everett plays this role so well and puts a femme fatale spin on Whitney which is great. In this episode we also get to see the real intentions of Vernon Masters (Kurtwood Smith) and Chief Jack Thompson (Chad Michael Murray) as they try to win the favor of Chadwick and do everything they can to stop Agent Carter. This is the first time we see any real emotion out of Jarvis which is great and it shows how even a man like him can only be pushed so far to the brink.
Marvel’s Agent Carter is such a great show in every aspect from plot, to entertainment value, to the characters, and those who portray them. It was great to see Dottie get a lot of attention this episode as she goes head-to-head with Whitney and Masters. Bridget Regan is a great actress and it shows in this role. Next week is another two-episode night which will lead up to the season finale. I wish this show ran longer because it is so much fun to watch.
