Lit Brick 01 cvrSomehow when anything involving sex comes up on the What’cha Reading check carousel everyone knows it’s for me to review. Of course they’re all right. I love this stuff. Put the words “smut” and “Ancient Greece” together and forget it I’m all in. “Lit Brick #1: Lysistrata and Other Smut From Ancient Greece” is a fun and enlightening take on the ancient play, with some Sappho tossed in for girl on girl color.

For those who don’t know, Lysistrata is the story of how one woman convinces the women of Greece to withhold sex from their husbands until they end the Peloponnesian War. It is quite funny and has always been a favorite of mine. In this telling it is one roommate, an academic/comic book writer, telling the other, a writer of erotic stories, the tale of Lysistrata. They don’t shy away from its ribald nature and in fact they revel in it. Once the tale is told she goes on to quote some of the fragments of Sappho’s writing to show just how erotic Ancient Greek literature could be.

I thoroughly enjoyed this comic. It does a good job encapsulating the story, while giving enough genuine quotes and back story to show it the proper respect. It underscores the titillation factor as well as questioning its reputation as an ancient feminist parable. The writing is fun and thought-provoking and more than a little educational even for someone like me who is familiar with the play. The art is simple but strong. It’s got a classic comic book feel to it which brings a nice comfortable atmosphere to the book. I felt like I was sitting around with friends hearing all about this ancient play, dirty jokes included.

I’m giving Lit Brick #1: Lysistrata and Other Smut From Ancient Greece, 4 out of 5 stars. It’s well worth reading for the laughs alone. I’m hoping to see more Lit Brick adaptations of classic texts in the near future.
