Review – Letter 44 Vol 1- A Near Perfect Scifi Adventure!

Review - Letter 44 Vol 1- A Near Perfect Scifi Adventure!Stephen Blades is in the process of taking over the Office of The President of The United States, a transition that is never easy for any President-elect, but he’s just read the letter from his predecessor. Things will never be the same…

Conspiracy theories are always interesting (and sometimes a little creepy), did we land on the moon, who really killed Kennedy, who shot Jr, well Letter 44 launches straight into a gigantic conspiracy and as you get entwined in the details it easy to see why some things may be better kept unsaid.

Someone (something?) is building a device out in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, we don’t know who, we don’t know why. We do know they aren’t from Earth and their tech is far beyond anything we’ve ever seen. Tell the people of Earth? Sure and risk mass hysteria and global panic. Instead the previous President kept the situation under wraps, and sent a manned mission to investigate, 7 years have passed since they left home and they’re closing in on their target.

Villains? Explorers? Scientist? Do they have plans for us? Do they even know we’re here?

Letter 44 vol 1 collects issues 1 through 6 and is chock full of excellent art, a great story and most importantly characters who drive the plot. Charles Soule has crafted and engaging, interesting, completely plausible story. His pacing between the President and the manned mission’s storylines really works well. And level of involvement he gives us in these characters lives is perfect, not too much or too little. Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque’s art is just plain great. His characters are full of emotion and the tech looks superb. After reading this trade I don’t get why issue #7 only came in at #263 for the month (sales figures icV2.com Top 300 Comics Actual–June 2014), more people should be reading this.

5 burning questions out of 5!

The trade hits on July 30, find it at you local comic shop, bookstores or through Oni Press or if you’re so inclined you can pre-order at amazon.

I’m about to dive into issues #7 and #8, I can’t wait to see where this story goes…

In other Letter 44 news we have this…

LETTER44_1_COLOR_4x6_COMP_WEB“LETTER 44 Makes the Voyage to Television!
Series Based on the Hit Comic in Development at SyFy
Oni Press is thrilled to announce that Charles Soule and Alberto Jiménez Alburquerque’s hit ongoing series LETTER 44, has been picked up for development for television by SyFy!

“As I see it, we’re in the midst of a golden age for serialized television drama, and I could not be more thrilled at the prospect of seeing Letter 44 translated into another medium,” said Soule. “Seeing President Blades and the crew of the Clarke brought to life, and watching their respective journeys unfold, will be a truly amazing thing. Go space!”

Produced by Oni Press’ sister company, Closed on Mondays, SyFy’s LETTER 44 will be a Universal Television and Universal Cable Productions co-production Executive Produced by Showrunner René Echevarria (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Castle, The 4400) and by the pilot’s Director and Screenwriter, Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3, U-571). Closed on Mondays’s Eric Gitter will serve as an Executive Producer and James Lucas Jones, and Joe Nozemack are also set to produce. More details on this science-fiction epic-in-the-making are expected to be revealed in the coming months.

In the meantime, LETTER 44 #6 hits stores on June 25th, and a collection of the series’ first story arc, LETTER 44 VOLUME 1: ESCAPE VELOCITY, is due to make landfall on July 30th; ensuring there’ll be plenty for eager fans to read while awaiting its television debut!”

And let me just say that if they stay true to the tone this will make a great series. Let’s hope SyFy allows for some real production value (like they used to), we don’t need another SHARKNADO.
